Past projects
Below are some projects we have done in the past.
Getting It "Write"!
SWA organized our inaugural 2005 SWA industry night networking
party on 29 September 2005 at Moxbar. Speakers included:
- Christopher Chia, CE of MDA, who talked about the government's
support and grants for writers
- Daniel Yun, CEO of Raintree Pictures, who talked about what
film producers are looking for from writers
- Seng Choon Meng, Head of Development at Scrawl Studios, who
spoke about writing for animation.
The Pitching Hour
For the first time, SWA is conducted a programme to:
- teach young people how to write easily-marketable story ideas
and
- pitch their ideas to producers and investors who can produce
the ideas onto the big screen.
It happened on 3 days in June and July 2005.
Script Development Program
This course was initiated by Daniel Chan, who was our SWA founding
president. (Starting from late 2005, the course is now run under Daniel's
newly formed company, ScreenAsia.)
Students received personalised support and guidance to develop
full-length screenplays from story concept to first draft. This
course was run for the following semesters under SWA:
- Semester commencing 5 May 2004,
ending 28 July 2004 (13 weeks)
- Semester commencing 11 August 2004,
ending 3 Nov 2004 (13 weeks)
- Semester commencing 16 February 2005,
ending 11 May 2005 (13 weeks)
- Semester commencing 25 May 2005,
ending 17 August 2005 (13 weeks)
Scriptwriting Introductory courses
In conjunction with MDA's National Scriptwriting Competition
2004, we re-conducted these one-day courses:
- Introduction to scriptwriting
for feature films
- Introduction to scriptwriting
for television
These 2 one-day courses will be conducted on 24th and 31st
of July.
Half-day talk: How To Sell Your Screenplay
SWA organized this event on 26 June 2004 (Saturday) at The
Substation, where Juan Foo (producer/writer) and Samuel Seow (entertainment
& media lawyer) talked about the art and craft of selling
a screenplay and the legalities involved in the process.

Visual Treatment Workshop
On the weekend of 6 and 7 Dec 2003, Screenwriters Association
(Singapore) gave a workshop on the visual treatment -- SWA's approach
to translating textual treatments into graphic form. Daniel Yun
from Rain Tree Pictures graced the occasion on the first morning
when he gave a talk and fielded questions.
Martin Baynton workshop
On Friday 17 October 2003, Screenwriters Association (Singapore)
and the Media Development Authority presented the workshop "Writing
for Television: Building the Foundations for a Sustainable Television
Series", conducted by Martin Baynton.
Scriptwriting & Producing Masterclass Lecture and Workshop,
by Christine Olsen
(August 2003)
On 20 August 2003, we organized a workshop and a lecture conducted
by Christine Olsen -- acclaimed writer and co-producer of Rabbit-Proof
Fence.
Robert McKee's Story Seminar
(January 2003)
In January 2003, Screenwriters Association hosted Robert McKee's
visit here. Hollywood's most wanted scriptwriting guru gave his
world-famous Story Seminar in Singapore.
The response to the Seminar was 94% of the total seating capacity.
The success of the Seminar had also brought about a keen attitude
of government agencies to work with the Association to develop
the craft of screenwriting in Singapore.
Signing of Proposal to Censorship Review Committee
(October 2002)
The Association was invited by TheatreWorks to sign on the
Proposal to the Censorship Review Committee in October 2002 in
support of an appeal to the Committee to consider relaxing censorship
and adopting a belting, rating, zoning methodology on artistic
works.
Screenwriters Talk at the Substation
(September - October 2002)
We organised a series of SCREENWRITERS' TALKS: TUESDAY SERIES
2002 under The Substation's Moving Images programme. The series
ran for 6 Tuesdays in the month of September to October 2002 at
The Substation.
The talks by professional screenwriters for young screenwriters
covered various areas of filmmaking -- scriptwriting for television,
feature film and even novel adaptation. The idea was to create
a sense of community by having professionals give back to the
younger writers and create a "cycle of life".

(1) Mr Esan Sivalingam: Half hour TV Sitcom Scriptwriting
(2) Ms Wee Li Lin: Writing A Short Film
(3) Mr Lee Theanjeen: Short Story Adaptations
(4) Mr Amos Kwok and (5) Mr Andy Logam-Tan: Writing Half hour
to one hour TV Dramas
(6) Mr Lionel Chok, (7) Mr Pablo Tan, and (8) Ms Mabel Gan-Millians
who each covered the topic of Telemovie Writing
(9) CheeK: Feature Film
Talks at Kinokuniya Book Store
(August 2002)
With the support of Kinukoniya, the Association was able to
conduct afternoon talks on 2 separate Saturdays at the junctions
within the premise of the Kinokuniya in Takashimaya.
Speakers included Samuel Seow, Daniel Chan, Lau Mun Ying and
James Mairata.
Script Development Program /
Screen:Play Development Program
(July 2002)
The Script Development Program, later renamed Screen:Play
Development Program, was a coaching initiative started
to help members develop their ideas into screenplays. This program
replaced the Association’s monthly meetings. The program commenced
in July 2002 and was conducted by a member, Mr Lau Mun Ying. The
group who attended the program consists of a diverse group of
9 members.
Survey on Screenwriters
(1st half of 2002)
The Association started a wage survey in the first half of
2002. The survey was targeted at writers for TV and/or the Screen
to obtain an understanding of the local scene and the conditions
for writers. The result of the survey was published on 15 October
2002 and was presented as part of the Wages Survey for Production
Workers in Singapore, at the UNI-MEI Conference in October 2002.
